Divination
Divination in the Balkans does not differ greatly from other systems all over the world. It was used by people that had no connection with existing religious systems, either seriously or for mere entertainment. The techniques for divination differed, determined primarily by the cultural environment. For example, if people drink tea in a country or area, they will divine using tea leaves, and if coffee is the favorite drink, coffee grounds will be used to tell the future. Peoples that live near an ocean will use shells or something sea-oriented to tell the future, according to their religious or traditional beliefs.
The main difference in the Balkans comes from that everyone uses the same technique, but the results differ. Here again we speak of qualifications; it is different when a random woman looks into the cup of coffee, as opposed to when a Witch or actual clairvoyant does the same.
A Witch is considered to be clairvoyant because she inherited her talent, by birth or after receiving her initiation. This is not correct. Not all Witches are equally clairvoyant, and some of them are not at all. There is a tradition that each of them has a specialty and, of course, you expect the best results from a Witch whose specific specialty is divination.
Techniques of foretelling within the group of Witches that practice this discipline can vary greatly, because the Witch herself determines the technique that is most suitable for her. That could a traditional method, but might be some newly created one that she created by her own affinities, or instructions that she got from higher forces during the ritual trance.
That means that the Witch is clairvoyant from the very beginning and the techniques that she uses serve only to clarify her focus additional for better concentration, and to better connect her to what she sees. For example, when a common person foretells the future through coffee grounds she observes shapes that are formed flowing down the walls of the upturned coffee cup and she interprets them one by one, exactly as it was taught to her from another person or from a suitable book. Unlike the common person, a Witch observes these shapes, but she also receives imagery in her mind, and it is very common for her to change her interpretation of events based on the additional information the imagery provide..
We need to say that Balkan Witches, no matter how long they have practiced, have never used crystal balls, Tarot cards, or astrology. It is almost impossible to say which methods were used and those that still are simply because of their individuality and diversity, but we will talk about a few of the methods that have survived the test of time.
If we look at it in this manner, we can see that there are three basic methods of fortune-telling, and these are:
1. Direct — either looking at the photograph or holding a personal item of the person whose fortune you want to predict.
2. Indirect — foretelling the future through coffee grounds, tea leaves, bones, etc.
